
Yes. I know it's not really the birthday for all those bookburners past, present and future but it might as well be. I remember the short interlude period in between the book's immediate release and when the protests started. I found a pile of them in a bookshop and noted the cover and roughly equated the name of the title to a marketing scheme geared for heavy metal bands. This was coming at a time when tabloids and sensationalistic talk shows emerged with the likes of Geraldo Rivera and of course the proliferation of allegations of Satanic worshippers and pedophilia. That was the late Eighties for you and I went on my way out of those premises and back onto a busy street on a sunny day. Not long after that raging mobs were burning this book on a global scale and it became evident that this would be a best seller due to their publicity efforts. In the book trade it was regarded as "pulp" and ready to go back into the blender but in this case recycling was not to be.
